Preschool Ministry is Kinda Chic

Okay, chic is probably not the word I would use for working with preschoolers, but since it’s all-over social media right now, I’ll jump on board. But other words would I use?

Challenging

Yes, it’s challenging to work with preschoolers. They are sitting quietly one minute and jumping off tables the next. They know both everything and nothing. They’re independent but still want mommy. Sometimes they don’t listen. Sometimes they’re angry. Sometimes they kick or hit or bite. Because — guess what? — they have emotions. And they haven’t really learned to regulate them yet.

Inspiring

Littles are making so many brain connections at this age. They go from not knowing what a letter is to writing their names. They learn amazing things like tying their shoes, using scissors, singing, creating, memorizing. They build friendships and navigate relationships. They learn that they have preferences and they try new things. It’s an inspiring thing to watch.

Frustrating

Yep, it can be frustrating to teach preschoolers. When teaching at church, you maybe get an hour with them, and you try to fit in worship and Bible lessons and crafts and sometimes you wonder if anything even sank in. Preschool ministry does matter and even if they’re not understanding everything, they are feeling your love for them and your love for Jesus.

Rewarding

Littles are fantastic humans. I love working with preschoolers. No, they don’t hold on to everything you say — though there are certainly ways to help that –but when they do grasp something, when they remember a truth about God, it is incredibly rewarding! Teachers, leaders, volunteers: you are doing kingdom work.

One word that I know working with preschoolers is not? It’s not a waste. It’s not a waste of time or budget or volunteers. It can be frustrating and challenging but it’s so much more inspiring and rewarding. Keep up the good work. Chic ministry looks good on you!
