So, you’ve decided to start a choir or are, at least, considering it. Now what? Choosing the music is something that many people struggle with so here are some handy guidelines.

Start Simple.

Choose a song in a child’s vocal range. This typically is around C4-C5. Think not too high for the average alto and not too low for a soprano. For older kids, this can increase to A4-E5.

Choose a song in unison. Don’t jump right into harmonies. Start with unison and maybe you can grow from there.

Choose a song that’s easy to memorize. Don’t pick a song that’s super wordy. Pick one with repetition.

Choose a song with basic instrumentation. Full bands and loops or big orchestras will overwhelm their sound. Piano alone or a basic band that keeps their melody clear is ideal.

Choose a song without actions. Some people will fight me to the end on this, but your audio engineer (like my husband) will thank you. Beginning singers can either do hand motions well or sing well, not both.

Choose a song with lyrics that actually help train the kiddos. Songs are fantastic for memorizing scripture and key Bible truths so use this opportunity.

Little JAM Sessions has music that incorporates all of this and comes with six weeks of Bible lessons, crafts, and take-home activities as well. Check them out here!
